Summer Ministry --- Scranton, Pennsylvania
Sisters who volunteer for this ministry opportunity would be involved on a daily basis with various programs and services offered by St. Joseph's Center Maternity and Family Services and Friends of the Poor. Both ministries are sponsored by the Scranton IHM community.
St. Joseph's Center Maternity and Family Services offers a continuum of housing and community based programs to women experiencing crisis pregnancies and families struggling to raise young children. Services include: pregnancy testing, pregnancy counseling, Baby Pantry, adoptions programs, a shelter for pregnant women and supportive housing for mothers with babies. There are always a variety of volunteer opportunities available depending on current needs. Some of the volunteer activities include but are not limited to: babysitting, tutoring for GED, sorting donations of baby clothes and other items, shopping for diapers and baby clothes, transporting and delivering baby items and providing encouragement to young mothers. Sister Ann Walsh serves as the Director of the Mother Infant Home, a component of Maternity and Family Services.
Friends of the Poor is an outreach ministry to those who are economically challenged living in the greater Scranton area. The ministry located within low-income housing offers two food pantries and provides gently used clothing and furniture. Both locations serve as the site for the free summer lunch program for children. Throughout the summer, children from low-income households participate in one day excursions to a destination of historic or educational importance. Sisters might participate in the food pantry with receiving, sorting and distributing donations, interaction with the children in the summer lunch program and/or as chaperones on the weekly summer excursion. Sister Maryalice Jacquinot serves as the Director of Friends of the Poor.
Throughout the summer, Sr. Ann and Sr. Maryalice collaborate to provide service projects each Thursday for local high school students. Sisters would be welcome to participate in these projects which might include food drive sorting and/or clothing sorting and interaction with young people.
Housing and transportation will be provided at IHM Center.

Epiphany Education Center --- Detroit, Michigan
Our program includes remedial math and reading sessions along with some enrichment for students going into grades 3-8 in the fall of '10. The program will be Monday through Friday, from 9:00am-Noon.
We will have 3 groups of 10 students each scheduled for each session. They will rotate each hour, so all 30 students receive reading, math, and enrichment daily. New students to the program will be given placement assessments for reading and math prior before starting on Aug.2. The reading computer program, "Read Naturally" is individualized and promotes fluency and comprehension. The math program is based on the "SRA Math Labs" and can be individualized as well.
Enrichment sessions consist of Art, Art Appreciation, Ecology, and Creative Writing. Depending on our adult volunteers' talents and skills, other types of enrichment may be included such as music, drama, and story telling. An integral part of this session may be one field trip for everyone.
An orientation for staff and adult volunteers will be held prior to beginning the week. It is our hope that some high school students will assist us as they have done in the past summers. Plan to arrive in Detroit prior to Monday.
Some ways of helping are: tutoring individual students, guiding students in a group setting, acting as a receptionist and secretary, teaching math and/or reading daily to
3 groups of 10 students (math teachers are one of our greatest needs), and teaching and/or assisting with enrichment sessions.
We are not able to offer any monetary stipend, but believe that coming to the Midwest and being a part of this service to disadvantaged children is sufficient recompense. Transportation to Detroit is your responsibility. Local transportation will be provided.
If interested please contact us by phone or email. We look forward to being with you.
